Details

Artist and designer Eric Ravilious is renowned for some of the 20th Century’s most iconic depictions of the Sussex countryside. Since the 1930s Towner has developed one of the largest public collections of Ravilious’ work as well as extensive archive materials.

Our Ravilious Room is a dedicated space to view a selection of his finest watercolours, prints and ceramics, explore our archive and browse books on the artist.

Following their inclusion in our 12 month touring exhibition Ravilious & Co. The Pattern of Friendship, many of Towner’s Ravilious watercolours are now being given a period of rest, to protect the paintings from fading due to excessive light exposure.

The current Ravilious Room display features works by Eric Ravilious complimented by those of his contemporaries, Edward Bawden, Tirzah Garwood, Enid Marx, Douglas Percy Bliss and Peggy Angus. It also features Towner’s latest acquisition to the permanent collection Beachy Head, 1939, as well as a large selection of Ravilious’ ceramic designs for Wedgwood.
