Haydn Cello Concerto in C
Brahms Symphony No. 4
Thomas Blunt conductor
Laura van der Heijden cello
London Philharmonic Orchestra
When Johannes Brahms wrote his fourth and final symphony, he wasn’t going gently into the night: it begins with a sigh, but ends with a tempest. Filled with heartfelt melody, it’s one of those rare tragedies that leave you feeling uplifted, and conductor Thomas Blunt knows how to make it sing – just as the brilliant young British cellist Laura van der Heijden will find all the elegance, energy and wit in Haydn’s sunny Cello Concerto. But we begin with music’s most famous boat-trip, as the young Felix Mendelssohn sets sail for the Hebrides. You can almost taste the sea-spray.
