Record Numbers at 2008 Bandstand Tributes

13th October 2008

Queen Tribute at The Bandstand
More than 27,000 people packed into Eastbourne Bandstand this year with nearly 10,000 enjoying the Friday Night Tribute concerts making 2008 a record year for the seafront venue.

The weekly tribute nights exceeded the previous year's sales once again providing nearly a third share of the total Bandstand audience for 2008. Ticket numbers were up 17% on 2007 with audiences enjoying a huge range of tribute bands, from the Spice Girls and Take That to a brand new Rocky Horror evening, with the Abba Firework Finale proving the most popular selling out three weeks before!

Eastbourne Borough Council Spokesperson for Tourism, Cllr Steve Wallis said "2008 has been a fantastic year for Eastbourne Bandstand and brought even bigger success than last year. The country's only fully operational Bandstand, Eastbourne can be proud of this unique entertainment venue and we are keen to continue promoting this historic landmark to both visitors and residents. It's really pleasing to see that so many people enjoyed its concerts over this past season."

Audiences also flocked to the seafront landmark for a host of other concerts every week, including the spectacular 1812 firework nights on Wednesday, Sunday Night on the Proms, Saturday Afternoon on Broadway and Big Band on Thursday.

Despite the unpredictable summer weather audiences still turned up in their thousands with June's Queen Tribute selling out even in the rain. Audiences sang along to Queen classics including I Want to Break Free, Bohemian Rhapsody and Don't Stop Me Now, literally dancing and singing in the rain!

Eastbourne Bandstand has now closed for the season but will re-open for Christmas Day and Boxing Day when the popular festive concerts return for two mornings of traditional entertainment, all for free.

Next year's concert programme is still being worked on but the venue will re-open for 2009 on Easter Sunday with a traditional afternoon concert.
