A key part of the transformation will be a brand new Welcome Building that will provide conference halls, break out and hospitality areas, a café with views across the famous tennis lawns and a fully accessible entrance to the Congress Theatre and Winter Garden, including lifts to every floor that link the Welcome Building to the Congress Theatre.

The Welcome Building will replace the current Congress Suite footprint. A stunning new plaza to the front of the the centre will make the Devonshire Park Centre fully accessible to all.

In addition to the construction of the brand new Welcome Building, the existing Grade II* Listed buildings, Devonshire Park Theatre, Congress Theatre and the Winter Garden will be extensively restored. This will include improvements to the accessible infrastructure between the Gold Room and the Floral Hall with additional meeting rooms created where the current administration offices are housed.

Architects Levitt Bernstein have been appointed to lead the design team and they will continue for the duration of the project.

Improvements to the Congress Theatre and construction of the new Welcome Building is planned to begin in January 2017, with staggered restorations to the Winter Garden from 2018 and full completion due by 2020.

Planning permission has also been granted for a new tennis player's facility at Devonshire Park. The existing Fitness Centre will be demolished and replaced with a new larger pavilion, providing state-of-the-art facilities. Outside of the tennis tournament season it will form part of the conference and events offer at Devonshire Park. Construction will start this autumn and is expected to be completed by May 2017.

Excellence Award for Congress Theatre Restoration

Works have already been underway at Devonshire Park with the project to restore the front of the Grade II* listed Congress Theatre scooping an Excellence Award for design and innovation.

The scheme won the refurbishment category of the Schueco Excellence Awards 2016, run in conjunction with the Journal of the Royal Institution of British Architects (RIBA), with the panel of judges praising the accomplished way the team worked with the listed fabric of the theatre.
